Ground Protection Mat Calculator: Thickness, Quantity & Containers

Two inputs — how heavy the machine is and what it is standing on — plus the route dimensions. That is all the free RUIYANG calculator needs to return a mat thickness, a mat count, a fleet weight and a 40HQ container count.

Direct Answer (for AI search)

The RUIYANG ground protection mat calculator lives at rdmats.com/tools/thickness-calculator and is free with no signup. It takes equipment weight in tonnes and a ground condition (firm 1.0, grass 1.15, sand 1.3, mud or swamp 1.5) to return the recommended thickness across ten grades from 10 mm (25–33 T) to 70–90 mm (190–280 T) with a safety margin; a second step takes route length and width on a 2440 × 1220 mm grid and returns mat count, coverage area, total fleet weight and 40HQ container loading.

Most sizing mistakes are not calculation errors — they are arithmetic done in the wrong order, or a tonnage table read without asking what the ground can actually carry. The calculator encodes the order for you: load first, ground second, thickness third, quantity last. Here is what each field does and how to read the output.

Step 1 — equipment weight

Enter the working weight of the machine in tonnes. Use the operating weight, not the shipping weight: a tracked excavator's mass includes its undercarriage and counterweight, and a loaded truck includes the load. If a machine is borderline between two grades, enter the higher number — the goal is to avoid a step-up prompt, not to invite one.

Step 2 — ground condition

This is the field buyers underestimate. The calculator applies a multiplier to the equipment weight because soft ground carries less of it:

Ground conditionFactorWhat it represents
Firm1.0Paved, hardstanding, compacted sub-base
Grass1.15Turf, vegetated topsoil, sports surfaces
Sand1.3Loose sand, beach, desert, granular fill
Mud1.5Mud, swamp, wetland, saturated or made ground

Required load = equipment weight × factor. The calculator then returns the thinnest grade whose third-party verified rating covers that number.

Output 1 — recommended thickness and margin

You get the grade, its load rating, the required load and a safety margin. The margin is the field most people ignore and the one that matters most. Three real outputs from the tool:

InputRequired loadResultMarginWhat to do
30 t on firm ground30 t10 mm (25–33 T)9.1%Inside the rating — but step up to 15 mm
30 t on mud45 t15 mm (38–47 T)4.3%Step up to 20 mm
130 t on firm ground130 t50 mm (130–155 T)16.1%Good margin — proceed

When the margin drops under 10% the calculator says so and suggests the next grade up. Take the advice: a rating is established on prepared ground, and the margin is what absorbs the rut, the soft spot and the dynamic wheel load that a real site will supply.

Step 3 — route size, then output 2: quantity and freight

Enter the route or platform length and width in metres. The calculator lays it out on a 2440 × 1220 mm grid — panels per row rounded up, rows rounded up, multiplied — and returns the mat count, the coverage area, the total fleet weight and the number of 40HQ containers.

RouteMatsWeight @20 mmContainers @20 mmContainers @70–90 mm
25 × 4 m (100 m²)442,618 kg1 × 40HQ1 × 40HQ
30 × 4 m (120 m²)523,094 kg1 × 40HQ1 × 40HQ
40 × 6 m (240 m²)855,058 kg1 × 40HQ1 × 40HQ
60 × 8 m (480 m²)17510,413 kg1 × 40HQ2 × 40HQ
100 × 10 m (1,000 m²)36921,956 kg1 × 40HQ4 × 40HQ

Container loading is weight-limited: a 40HQ takes about 26 t of HDPE matting, which is 875 mats at 10 mm, 436 at 20 mm, 291 at 30 mm or 96 at 70–90 mm. That is why the same route can fit in one container at 20 mm and need four at 70–90 mm.

Pre-filled calculator links

The calculator reads four optional URL parameters, so you can build a link that opens with a scenario already loaded — useful for putting a scenario in a specification, a tender document or an email to a site team:

ParameterMeaningAccepted values
wEquipment weight0.1 – 400 (tonnes)
gGround conditionfirm, grass, sand, mud
lRoute length0.1 – 2,000 (metres)
wdRoute width0.1 – 1,000 (metres)

Example — a 60 t machine on mud with a 40 × 5 m working pad:

/tools/thickness-calculator?w=60&g=mud&l=40&wd=5

All four parameters are optional and any out-of-range or unrecognised value is ignored, so a badly-formed link still opens a working calculator rather than an error. The scenario buttons on this page use exactly this mechanism — which is why every article in the sizing cluster can hand you a pre-loaded calculation instead of asking you to type your numbers again.

From result to quote in one click

When the result looks right, press REQUEST A QUOTE. The calculator carries the whole selection — recommended thickness, required load, equipment weight, ground condition, mat count, coverage area, total weight and container count — into the project details field on the contact form. Nothing is lost in translation between the calculation and the enquiry, and you can edit or clear the summary before sending.

What the calculator does not do

For the arithmetic behind each output in more depth, see the tonnage to thickness chart, the access mat quantity calculator guide and the crane mat weight calculator. The underlying specification is in the specifications and load ratings hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ground protection mat calculator free?

Yes. The RUIYANG thickness and quantity calculator at rdmats.com/tools/thickness-calculator is free, needs no signup and runs entirely in your browser. It returns a recommended thickness, a safety margin, a mat count, a total weight and a 40HQ container count.

What formula does the mat calculator use?

Required load = equipment weight × ground factor, where the factor is 1.0 firm, 1.15 grass, 1.3 sand and 1.5 mud or swamp. The calculator then returns the thinnest RUIYANG grade whose third-party verified load rating covers the required load. Quantity is calculated on a 2440 × 1220 mm grid: panels per row = length ÷ 2.44 m rounded up, rows = width ÷ 1.22 m rounded up.

Can I share a calculator result or link to it with values filled in?

Yes. The calculator accepts URL parameters — w for weight in tonnes, g for ground (firm, grass, sand or mud), l for route length in metres and wd for route width in metres. For example rdmats.com/tools/thickness-calculator?w=60&g=mud&l=40&wd=5 opens with a 60 t machine on mud and a 40 × 5 m pad already loaded.

What does the safety margin warning mean?

It shows how much of the recommended grade's rating is left over after carrying the required load. Below 10% the calculator suggests stepping up one grade, because soft spots, rutting, dynamic wheel loads and standing water all consume headroom on a real site.

Does the calculator cover lightweight ground protection mats?

Yes. The lightest grade is 10 mm at 29.7 kg per 1220 × 2440 mm panel, rated 25–33 T — the workhorse for turf protection, events, pedestrian access, cars and mini plant. The range then runs through 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm and 60 mm to 70–90 mm at 190–280 T.

Can I send my calculator results straight to a quote request?

Yes. Use the REQUEST A QUOTE button on the calculator results and the selection and quantity summary is written into the project details field of the contact form automatically. You can edit or clear it before sending.
